PSN is definitely out of commission for a good while. It's been stated that they are rebuilding their system to prevent future network intrusions.
Here is some more info that Sony should be emailing to PSN members soon:

lol. i know this is funny. but notice, everytime i get in an argument with a ps3 person and the biggest thing they say is that gaming online is free... notice what happens when you dont pay for using a network that has to deal with so much traffic? lol. good luck to them i guess, haha

Quick Update on the PSN Network Breach:
While it cannot be ruled out as a possibility, Sony states that customer credit card information may not have been accessed and remains safe. This information has been confirmed by major credit card companies (PlayStation Network Credit Card Information Remains Safe, Say Card Companies - IndustryGamers).
Several government agencies from different nations are currently assisting Sony with tracking down the source of the data breach, including the United States Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation (PSN Data Breach Investigation Getting Help From Homeland Security - IndustryGamers).
Sony will require users to download a new firmware update when the network comes back online as well as prompt users to change their passwords (PlayStation Network Breach Prompts System Software Update - IndustryGamers).
Sony is also evaluating potential goodwill gestures for customer patience during the outage (PlayStation Network Down: Sony 'Evaluating' Goodwill Gesture for Customers - IndustryGamers).
